Pro Bono Legal Services

Individuals who are unable to pay for the services of a lawyer to assist them in filing a bankruptcy or for other legal work may be able to qualify for free or reduced cost legal services. In New Jersey, all counties have Legal Aid or Legal Services offices. Legal Services of New Jersey coordinates the state wide system and its web site listed the locations of office through New Jersey. Also see description of Pro Bono programs in New Jersey.

Legal Services intake is usually by appointment. The prospective client must meet specific income and expense guidelines. Anyone who is interested should be prepared to document their income and living expenses.

The New Jersey Bankruptcy Court web site has information about the pro bono bankruptcy panel of lawyers who are experienced in bankruptcy law and who are willing to assist those who cannot pay for the services of an attorney. The site also maintains information about each county’s lawyer referral program and reduced fees for consultations.

The New Jersey Bankruptcy Court’s web site is http://www.njb.uscourts.gov. Please use the drop down menu to find the pro bono bankruptcy panel information.
